New Packaging for Windows Vista and 2007 Office System Announced

"With Windows Vista and 2007 Office system, we didn't just redesign the software packages themselves, but are also introducing new packaging for the two products... Designed to be user-friendly, the new packaging is a small, hard, plastic container that’s designed to protect the software inside for life-long use."

These appear to still be renderings, and no specifics on dimensions or materials. I'll be interested to see this form factor in person.

Interesting news, also Google has fully absorbed recently acquired Writely by combining it with spreadsheets and giving it a "Google Docs & Spreadsheets" brand at http://docs.google.com/.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW): "Inquisitor bills itself as 'Spotlight for the web,'... The beta of the 3rd version of this Safari plugin has been released, and the developer has announced that Inquisitor is now free (it was previously €5)."

I've also added this to my Safari Resources page.

37signals Offers Its Former-eBook As Website & Paperback

37signals: "So far we've sold over 23,000 copies of Getting Real in PDF format. We introduced it on March 1 of this year, so we're pretty thrilled with the results.

But 23,000 readers isn't enough. We want millions of people to read the book. So today we introduce two new flavors that make the content even more accessible. And, in one case, completely free."

Nice, you can view online now as well as get an ebook or paperback version. Go get Get Real.

Google Co-op - Custom Search Engine

"Harness the power of Google search - Create a highly specialized Custom Search Engine that reflects your knowledge and interests. Place it on your website and, using our AdSense for Search program, make money from the resulting traffic."

This was a big deal announcement yesterday. I gave it a try and have updated the J.Y. search page to use Co-op. It's simple enough to set up, slightly customize, and include on a site. We'll see how it goes...

Bulletproof HTML

Bulletproof HTML: 37 Steps to Perfect Markup [Privacy and Trust]: "This article highlights and answers some of the most frequently asked questions about HTML. HTML is the foundation of the Web, and both developers and designers need to understand it."

More good nuts n' bolts stuff neatly organized and served to you in blue, white and orange. I also dig the illustration.

Resolution independence in Leopard confirmed by Apple

"Mac OS X Leopard will indeed make use of resolution independence, Apple has confirmed in a posting to its developer website... The Quartz-driven technology will allow developers to author applications that offer users the choice of viewing more detail (more pixels per point, but fewer points on the screen) or a larger user interface (fewer pixels per point but more points on the screen) without altering the resolution of the computer's display."

Download Squad Highlights J.Y. Design iPulse Jackets

Cool iPulse skins from J.Y. Design - Download Squad: "Normally, I ignore skinable applications, or at least the skins. My aversion probably stems from experiences with early versions of KDE and GNOME, where skins invariably broke even routine upgrades. That probably says more about skin designers than the idea of skins, but I scare easily... J.Y., though, has convinced me to give skining another go-around with his latest set of free Jackets for iPulse, which was already the ultimate OS X eye candy... But it's even cooler when the pulsing widget looks like Luke's Jedi training remote from Episode IV, or the New Years' ball that drops in Times Square. Or our Martian Overlords. Best of all, they don't seem to break any functionality..."

Thanks to J. Savage for the nice writeup!

Who will win the developers?

flashmagazine.com: "Robert Scoble has an interesting post on what he calls the 'Microsoft and Adobe developer/designer death match'. This is definetly an exaggeration but he is right to some degree. There will be a battle of some sorts and Microsoft just started it. Is Adobe well prepared?" 'nuff said, worth a read.

Potion Factory Announces Tangerine BETA

"Tangerine lets you easily create playlists with upbeat music, or playlists for relaxing. It does that by analyzing the BPM and beat intensity of the songs in your iTunes library. As mentioned in the previous post, it analyzes the songs blazingly fast to the tune of more than 3 per second (on an 1.83 Ghz Core Duo iMac)..."

Fun stuff fro PF, worth trying out for the app icon alone ;-P

66 Simple Ways to Be Green

creativepro.com: "You are just one person. But we, the creative professional community, are a significant force. The choices we make matter. If you follow through with just one of these 66 tips, you'll have improved the environment we all live in...

As designers and illustrators, we are in a unique position in that we are involved at the start of the product design and advertising processes. We create ideas to make products sell better, to express our client's message, and we even create products themselves. We also carry our ideas through the production phase -- from paint on paper, to laying out the text in books, to designing the dies for packaging, to overseeing print runs. Our decisions at the production level often stick."

Microsoft releases long-awaited Explorer 7

"Microsoft Corp. released Internet Explorer 7 on Wednesday, the first major upgrade to its Web browser since 2001 with new features aimed at preventing online fraud and improving ease of use...

IE 7 is available immediately to Windows XP users and it will eventually serve as the default browser for Microsoft's much-anticipated Windows Vista operating system, due out to consumers in early 2007."

IE 7 is available for download at www.microsoft.com/ie

Let's hope that support for standards in this final release is close to that of Firefox. Unfortunately for designers/developers this more likely means that we'll be testing for IE 5, 6, and now 7 too - at least until Vista ships and the adoption rate for 7 picks up.

iSquint iPod Video Converter 1.5 Released

"Just drag in your file, and click Start. You can also choose 'TV' or 'iPod' size, set your quality, or even go all-out by playing in the Advanced drawer. On a 1GHz G4, iSquint can convert most video files to iPod-screen-sized videos in realtime."

Great little free video converter. It also works well to convert .flv (Flash video, like the ones on YouTube) files to QuickTime.

Adobe Buys Mobile Software Technology Developed by Actimagine

"Adobe Systems has acquired vector graphics technology from Actimagine, in a move to bolster its mobile technologies. Actimagine's vector graphics, which create images based on geometric formulas, will be used in Adobe Flash Lite and the company's other mobile products.

The acquisition also calls for Actimagine to include existing and future versions of Adobe Flash Lite in its service offerings. Adobe has been working on making Flash a general-purpose application development platform that would focus on video delivery, Web applications designed to run outside the browser, and mobile device applications."
